Luxury Wine Tasting Weekend in Ronda

April 23rd, 2012

Escape to the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda

for a long, luxurious weekend of wine tasting

The late evening sun was streaming through the small window, carved out of the ancient, metre thick stone wall. The warm light cast shadows across the sixteenth century frescoes on the walls of this tiny chapel, close to the mountain town of Ronda.

The sound of a cork being gently eased out a bottle broke the silence, and then the rich, ruby and violet wine was poured into glasses.

Yet this is not an ordinary chapel; and this is not Sacramental wine.

Old favourite

Ronda, the picture perfect Andalusian cliff top town, at the heart of the dramatic Serranía de Ronda mountain range, has always been a favourite amongst visitors. Its famous river gorge, boasting vertiginous balconies hanging over the 120 metre cliffs looking out to the verdant, fertile pastures below, is certainly unique.

The original walled Arab medina, with its fascinating mix of Moorish palaces and centuries old Spanish patio houses, is joined to the no less historic centre of Ronda by the extraordinary eighteenth century ‘Puente Nuevo’ bridge that spans the gorge of the river Guadalevín. The town is home to Spain’s oldest bullfighting ring and is chockfull of quintessential Andalusian charm.

Yet, in the last few years this rural citadel has started to gain even more international acclaim; this time for its wines. Wine tourism is now one of its greatest draws, as visitors look to define long weekends spent in Ronda’s boutique hotels with gastronomy and fine wine.

Discovering The Luxury Resorts of Bali’s Nusa Dua

Here are clippings from recently published features of mine about Bali’s Nusa Dua resort enclave.

Go West – Luxurious retreats in western Andalucia

March 19th, 2012

For the discerning traveller looking for picturesque, unspoilt nature, authentic local gastronomy and a touch of luxury and style, there is no need to go far afield; it’s all right here in southern Spain

It may have taken some time, but Andalucía is becoming increasingly recognised not just for its sun and sea, but for much broader attributes and qualities. These encompass artisan, organic food and gastronomy; some of Europe’s finest natural parks and beaches; and the new breed of luxury boutique hotels and resorts with authentic design and character.

Barcelona – The Long Luxury Weekend

February 18th, 2012

Athletic bullfighters, dressed to kill in their elaborate, flamboyant, and heavily embroidered ‘suits of light’ are no longer part of Barcelona’s arts and entertainment; the six hundred year old tradition of fighting bulls is now banned here. Whether for animal welfare or simply as a rejection of Spanish culture is hard to decipher, but either way it is a powerful indication of how Barcelona has a clear sense of identity and is not afraid of change.

This vibrant Mediterranean city leapt onto the world’s stage, full of youthful energy and hope in 1992 with the Olympics, and now twenty years later continues to reinvent itself as a flourishing capital of commerce, fashion and style.

Ice Ice Baby! ICEHOTEL – Sweden

February 9th, 2012

When it comes to the hippest of hotels, there really cannot be anywhere more ‘cool’ than the original ‘IceHotel’ in Sweden, reconstructed each winter from the Arctic’s ice and snow.

There are igloos and then there is ‘IceHotel’. Located 200 kilometres within Sweden’s Arctic Circle, this is undoubtedly the most luxurious property made of ice. It can be found in the isolated community of Jukkasjärvi. This Swedish village is in Lapland, the archetypical Christmas winter wonderland that not only encompasses northern Sweden but also Norway and Finland.

Inspirational beauty

Here the glistening snow crunches under foot and the air is clear and pure; it is a place of inspirational beauty. Light defines this extraordinary landscape of arctic whites and pure blues. Although the days are endlessly long in summer with midnight sun, it is in the winter when people come from all over the world to experience the natural, unpredictable phenomenon of the ‘Aurora’ or Northern Lights.

When it comes to holidaying in sub zero temperatures of around minus 26 degrees centigrade, comfort becomes a priority; and it is ironic that the best night’s sleep can in fact be in the frozen suites of IceHotel.

The magic of IceHotel starts in December, when the freezing temperatures herald the start of the construction of the season’s new hotel. Each winter, from pure snow and two-tonne blocks of ice are taken from the frozen Torne River to make the hotel. This is remarkable concept; very environmentally conscious; the hotel strives to be carbon neutral and uses electivity from renewable sources.

Taking Tea in Taipei

January 20th, 2012

The air feels heavy with humidity and mist clings to the verdant mountainsides where orchids grow amongst the bark of forest trees. The scene is one of tranquillity and beauty, yet dominating the view is the unmistakable silhouette of one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers; a striking reminder that we are in fact close to the metropolis of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
Here amongst the rolling countryside, in an unassuming house with paint peeling off the wooden walls, I am not only witnessing, but partaking in what can only be described as a ceremony, one that is rich in cultural and historical significance.

Canada – the ultimate winter wonderland

January 12th, 2012

In keeping with the season here in the northern hemisphere, I’ve focused on Canada as the one of the world’s finest winter sports destinations, offering luxury accommodation; great urban chic and some serious mountain adventures.

I love my time in Whistler and despiet heacy snowfall, there was no problem landing at Vancouver (the airport has multiple runways, with heating and also technolgy to support landings in pratical zero visibility).

The drive up to the resort is stunning. I am also stayed at the Chateau by Fairmont in Whistler, so I also recomend that place.  Like the Four Seasons, it’s large but the style and ervice make you feel like more than just a number.

So here follows some clippings on Canada, the cities, accommodation and more. Enjoy

Escaping Dubai’s Desert Storm, and retreating to Al Maha Resort and Spa

October 15th, 2011

Dubai has become a maelstrom of construction, commerce, and tourism. Yet there is one place to shelter from this desert storm; the exclusive, luxury Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve of ‘Al Maha’

Dubai has redefined luxury tourism, not just in the Middle East, but across the globe, offering an extraordinary mix of high quality hospitality. Its rapid growth and the move towards higher volume tourism does not mean there is no where left for the elite to enjoy. There is still a magical corner of this sparkling Emirate that offers genuine exclusivity and tranquillity; a place where one can rediscover the romance of Arabia.

Bedouin-inspired retreat

The ‘Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa’, a Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel, is regarded as being at the centre of Dubai’s heritage and conservation efforts. Started as a personal project by the royal family, the reserve,, some 65 kilometres from Dubai nestles within a green and verdant oasis amongst some of Arabia’s most impressive dune and desert landscapes. The architects have created private suites, each in the style of an elaborate tent, so it all resembles an ancient Bedouin encampment.

However do not be fooled by the simplicity of the architecture; each suite is in fact a luxurious, up-to-date retreat, offering the very best in elite accommodation, combined with a high level of personalised service. Relax on the discreet, shaded terrace or take a dip in one’s very own private pool, or take an evening bath, prepared by a butler….
