Ice Ice Baby! ICEHOTEL – Sweden

February 9th, 2012

When it comes to the hippest of hotels, there really cannot be anywhere more ‘cool’ than the original ‘IceHotel’ in Sweden, reconstructed each winter from the Arctic’s ice and snow.

There are igloos and then there is ‘IceHotel’. Located 200 kilometres within Sweden’s Arctic Circle, this is undoubtedly the most luxurious property made of ice. It can be found in the isolated community of Jukkasjärvi. This Swedish village is in Lapland, the archetypical Christmas winter wonderland that not only encompasses northern Sweden but also Norway and Finland.

Inspirational beauty

Here the glistening snow crunches under foot and the air is clear and pure; it is a place of inspirational beauty. Light defines this extraordinary landscape of arctic whites and pure blues. Although the days are endlessly long in summer with midnight sun, it is in the winter when people come from all over the world to experience the natural, unpredictable phenomenon of the ‘Aurora’ or Northern Lights.

When it comes to holidaying in sub zero temperatures of around minus 26 degrees centigrade, comfort becomes a priority; and it is ironic that the best night’s sleep can in fact be in the frozen suites of IceHotel.

The magic of IceHotel starts in December, when the freezing temperatures herald the start of the construction of the season’s new hotel. Each winter, from pure snow and two-tonne blocks of ice are taken from the frozen Torne River to make the hotel. This is remarkable concept; very environmentally conscious; the hotel strives to be carbon neutral and uses electivity from renewable sources.

La Rioja – wine, gastronomy, architecture and art

August 22nd, 2011

Spain’s best known wine Rioja, takes its name from a fascinating region of northern Spain, an unforgettable short break destination

Wine tourism is big business and few other regions of Spain can boast such a sophisticated and compelling offering as La Rioja. The famous wine region lies between the rivers Oja and Ebro, and is home to hundreds of wine makers, with wineries or ‘bodegas’ spilling over into the neighbouring areas of The Basque Country and Navarra.

It makes a perfect self-drive break; offering a journey of discovery, where the many thread of Rioja’s culture of great wines, superb food, striking architecture and innovative art are woven together….

Frank O. Gehry’s distinctive signature titanium, (BTW, he also designed the Guggenheim in Bilbao, just to the north ) has been coloured here to reflect a bottle of Marques de Riscal Rioja – red for the wine, gold for the wire on the outside of the bottle and silver for the collar. Supposedly, the structure as a whole, supported by pillars is also meant to mimic the vines growing along rustic trellis in the neighbouring fields.

The interiors, designed Javier Muñoz, are very clean, almost Scandinavian-like. The suites are fitted out with bespoke furniture made from blond Maple Wood and tan leather and this is echoed throughout the public spaces, which are really impressive thanks to their huge, cathedral style high ceilings.

Overall, as is common in Spain and other parts of Europe, the team at the hotel lack the service levels of other international Luxury Collection Hotels – it isn’t as natural, intuitive and polished as one might find in say Asia but hey, the Marques de Riscal City of Wine, its location on the edge of the sleepy village of Elciego, and the great food and wine is good enough reason to come!

Rioja’s Cathedrals of Wine

March 3rd, 2011

Probably the most iconic of all Spanish wines, the Rioja is enjoying a renaissance thanks to modern wine making techniques, and innovative approaches from some of regions wine makers.

Routes and ways

I find northern Spain one of the most fascinating regions in Europe; with its diverse landscapes and highly distinctive cultures, and languages dating back millennia. The Camino de Santiago or St. James’ Way as it is also known is probably one of the most ancient routes that cuts through the region. Taken by pilgrims over the centuries, the route is now a centre piece of a multi-million euro tourism industry that uses the ancient, meditative way as a focus for the region’s history and gastronomy, taking in beautiful mediaeval cathedral cities along the way.

Yet, now there is a new route bring visitors on a pilgrimage of their own; the wines routes of Rioja and Navarra that take in modern cathedrals; architect designed wineries and bodegas that attract almost as much attention as the wines made within their climate controlled walls.

Celebrating the past, present and future of Andalucía’s culture

January 28th, 2011

The city of Granada’s new Cultural Centre, the ‘Memoria de Andalucía’ is a highly contemporary and innovative celebration of the region’s history, landscape, culture, and people.

Childhood memories of school trips to city museums have much to answer for; often intended by well-meaning teachers to be days-out to inspire and bring history and culture to life, usually ended in boredom and havoc on the bus trip home. For many these lasting memories would make museums a definite ‘no-no’ for sightseeing.

Yet Granada’s ‘Centro Cultural CajaGRANADA Memoria de Andalucía’ could well be the type of mold-breaking institution to change the idea of what a museum is and how it communicates with its audience. Combining world-class, avant-garde contemporary architecture with presentations that utilise the latest in interactive technology and media, the centre presents the rich cultural and natural diversity of Andalucía in a compelling and innovative way.
