A glimpse at the thriving arts scene in Estepona
Although Estepona on the western Costa del Sol, like many towns in Spain, is working to shake off an economic and political malaise; many foreign residents and locals are shaking up the local arts scene with new groups and clubs.
The cliché of ex-pat life on the coast might be that of golf, galas and gin & tonics, yet the reality in Estepona is that the local arts are a vibrant part of many foreign residents’ lives; and with more people getting involved, so the scene continues to flourish.
From a floral arts club, to a play reading group; from a classical choir, to art house film screenings; Estepona has something to offer everyone.
Sardines on a stick!
September 3rd, 2010
‘El espeto de sardinas’ is without doubt one of the best known and most iconic of Andalucía beach bar cuisine.
Up and down the coast, chiringuitos prepare grilled fresh sardines on small wooden or bamboo spits, staked in the sand, in front of charcoal barbeques and wood fires. It’s not uncommon to see the fires built on small, old fishing boats, filled with sand and positioned close to the bar, so that the appetising smell of freshly cooked fish and smoke entices customers.
The recent ‘Food and Sun’ Festival in Marbella saw a Brit beat many Spaniards at their own game, winning runner in the Espeto competition – an accolade that has caused a stir in on the paseo de marítimo in Marbella.
