Ice Ice Baby! ICEHOTEL – Sweden

February 9th, 2012

When it comes to the hippest of hotels, there really cannot be anywhere more ‘cool’ than the original ‘IceHotel’ in Sweden, reconstructed each winter from the Arctic’s ice and snow.

There are igloos and then there is ‘IceHotel’. Located 200 kilometres within Sweden’s Arctic Circle, this is undoubtedly the most luxurious property made of ice. It can be found in the isolated community of Jukkasjärvi. This Swedish village is in Lapland, the archetypical Christmas winter wonderland that not only encompasses northern Sweden but also Norway and Finland.

Inspirational beauty

Here the glistening snow crunches under foot and the air is clear and pure; it is a place of inspirational beauty. Light defines this extraordinary landscape of arctic whites and pure blues. Although the days are endlessly long in summer with midnight sun, it is in the winter when people come from all over the world to experience the natural, unpredictable phenomenon of the ‘Aurora’ or Northern Lights.

When it comes to holidaying in sub zero temperatures of around minus 26 degrees centigrade, comfort becomes a priority; and it is ironic that the best night’s sleep can in fact be in the frozen suites of IceHotel.

The magic of IceHotel starts in December, when the freezing temperatures herald the start of the construction of the season’s new hotel. Each winter, from pure snow and two-tonne blocks of ice are taken from the frozen Torne River to make the hotel. This is remarkable concept; very environmentally conscious; the hotel strives to be carbon neutral and uses electivity from renewable sources.

Canada – the ultimate winter wonderland

January 12th, 2012

In keeping with the season here in the northern hemisphere, I’ve focused on Canada as the one of the world’s finest winter sports destinations, offering luxury accommodation; great urban chic and some serious mountain adventures.

I love my time in Whistler and despiet heacy snowfall, there was no problem landing at Vancouver (the airport has multiple runways, with heating and also technolgy to support landings in pratical zero visibility).

The drive up to the resort is stunning. I am also stayed at the Chateau by Fairmont in Whistler, so I also recomend that place.  Like the Four Seasons, it’s large but the style and ervice make you feel like more than just a number.

So here follows some clippings on Canada, the cities, accommodation and more. Enjoy

Peter Edgerton Musician, writer, filmmaker – ‘Un paso por delante’ short film

December 31st, 2010

‘Un paso por delante’ is an 18 minute ‘cortometraje’ or short film that has been screened at Malaga’s Albéniz cinema and is about to be released on DVD with English subtitles. The film, ‘One step ahead’, has been a recent labour of love for the British born Malaga resident who is better known to many as a singer and musician. As well as directing the piece, Peter also wrote the poignant script. “It’s my first short film script but I’m always playing about with words in some form or other” smiles Peter. The film tells the story of Pablo a widower and his seven year old daughter Lucía who misses her mother. Pablo encourages his daughter to communicate with her mother by sending ‘magic balloons’ carrying coded messages that no one except her mother can decipher. “By chance, one of these messages will change the life of Pablo” Edgerton explains. “It is a love story with a positive ending.” Indeed, leaving the cinema after the magical 18 minutes, one realises how this short story of a young girl shows us that sometimes in adulthood we lose sight of the importance of being open-minded, and in life we need to be a little more fearless.
